Let's talk about something that nobody really prepares women for. Empty nesting. Because from what I've witnessed, most women aren't prepared for this chapter at all. It's almost like one day you're busy driving everyone everywhere, answering 17 questions a minute, stepping over shoes in the hallway, and then suddenly, silence. And if I'm being honest, it seems like so many women get hit with empty nesting like a cold fish slapped across the face. One minute, your whole identity revolves around being needed, and the next, your kids barely come downstairs, except, of course, for snacks and Wi-Fi. But I mean, seriously, when was the last time you even saw your teenager? Because mine would happily live upstairs indefinitely, if I didn't occasionally text, hey, please send proof of life. But friend, what if the reason this chapter feels so hard for so many women is because there was never any preparation for it? And what if instead of fearing this next chapter, we start preparing to thrive in it? Welcome back to her next chapter with me, Diana Gintu, where we have honest conversations about healing, growth, reinvention, and learning how to fully step into the woman you're becoming. And today, we're talking about how to empty nest like a boss. Now, technically, I'm not officially an empty nester yet, but I'm standing right there on the cliff. And that's exactly actually the whole point. I'm in prep mode because I truly believe one of the biggest mistakes women make is waiting until their children leave to figure out who they are without them. And friend, by then it can feel so terrifying. It's paralyzing. Just yesterday, I was talking to a new client during our first session, and honestly, my heart broke listening to her cry, not just because she was exhausted, though she absolutely was, but because underneath that exhaustion was fear. Absolute paralyzing fear for this next chapter. Her children are growing up, and you know what? They don't need her the same way anymore. You know, no more constant pickups and driving, no more hovering around the kitchen, no more little voices needing her every second, and as annoying as that was, and while part of us knows that that's healthy, right? That we don't have that anymore, another part of us whispers, if they don't need me anymore, am I still important?
SPEAKER_00Ouch, do I even matter? Friend, if that hits you in the gut, stay with me.
SPEAKER_01Because I think for so many women, especially women with emotional wounds, people-pleasing tendencies, or conditioning around worth, we learned very early on that love was connected to being needed, that our value came from what we did for others. So, of course, empty nesting can feel scary because it's not just about your kids leaving, it's about confronting the question: who am I now? But I want you to hear me clearly today. Your worth was never meant to be measured by how needed you are, you are lovable because you exist, you are worthy because you are you, not because you are over-functioning, over-delivering, over-producing, not because you sacrifice yourself into exhaustion. So before we go any further, I want you to just take a moment with me today. And I want you to say this with me. Even if it feels weird, even if it feels awkward, even if you don't believe it, I want you to just take a moment and repeat after me that I am still worthy and lovable and deeply valuable even as my role changes.
SPEAKER_00Let's do that again. I am still worthy, lovable, and deeply valuable even as my role changes.
SPEAKER_01In fact, I think this chapter can become one of the most beautiful chapters of our lives. But just like you don't wake up one day and casually run a marathon without training, we can't expect to transition into empty nesting with grace if we've done zero preparation. So let's talk prep. I've made a short list of a few things I'm doing to make this transition a lot easier. The first thing is let's start an emptiness bucket list. Yes, let's do it. Because I have turned my turning 50 bucket list into an emptiness bucket list, okay? And it's becoming iconic. I have things like get a tattoo, which I did a few months ago, and I have another one in my mind already. So, okay, you don't have to get a tattoo, but um, is there something that you've been wanting to do, but you've been too scared to do it? Do it, go bungee jumping, do something that gets your adrenaline going. Do it, get that bright red lipstick, wear that color, like do something that gets you out of that box that you've been placed in. Read books just for fun. That's what I did um this year as I'm turning 50 in a few weeks. Um, and some other things on my list I'll share with you just in case you're looking for ideas. I learned how to bake sourdough. Um, take I took more international trips, um, learn how to grow an herb garden, take more girl trips. I did an episode here a couple weeks ago on taking your girl trips, and you know what? Wear more vintage clothing, let's go back to our roots. I just want to become this person that I can be fully neat and authentic, and I am here for it. And that is what this bucket list is, right? I want to explore who she is. So go on this journey to discover who are you in this next chapter? What are some things that you have put on hold because you were busy being a mom? We all sacrifice some things, we all put things on the shelf because we didn't have time, we didn't have the luxury of experimentation, we didn't have the luxury to put some things in place. But now, this is the time to reconnect with yourself. Do a bucket list. The second thing is dream bigger for yourself again. Think about all the time motherhood required. The driving around, the school events, the sports, the organizing, the emotional labor. I want you to think about all the time that took because it did require time. And now some of that time is opening up. And you know what I say? Claim it. I want you to claim that time. And what do you want to do with that time? Do you want to write a book? Do you want to start a business? Do you want to learn how to paint? Do you want to take a photography class? Do you want to travel more? Do you want to start a podcast? Do you want to share a message? For me, one of the things that I'm starting, I don't know if I've ever shared this here, but I don't know how to swim. Now, I know how to kind of pedal a little bit, I know how to float, but I don't really know how to swim. I am terrified. And you guys know if you follow me on social media, you know how much I am around water. I go to the beach pretty often. I travel into tropical locations, but I don't really know how to swim. So one of the things I'm doing with my time as an empty nester is I am taking up swimming lessons and I will become a swimmer. So, ladies, it is time to reinvent yourself in midlife. Maybe it's not a hobby, but maybe it might be a second career. Um, maybe you might learn to play an instrument, but I truly believe that this is a time where we get to reinvent ourselves, and it can truly be one of the happiest times of our lives. This chapter is not your ending, it could be your expansion. The third thing is this next chapter is about prioritizing your health like it matters because it really does. Because most of us that are listening to this, um, I've talked a little bit about this, is perimenopause and menopause, right? What is happening to us, right? Our body, I mean, wow, there is a lot of changes. But here's the thing: this is a season where we need to start taking care of ourselves, our bodies. Make those doctor appointments, take the supplements, move your body, start the skincare routines. It is not too late. If you are wanting to go into this next chapter with some vitality, some energy, we're gonna have to start taking care of ourselves. One of the favorite things that I like to do at nighttime is what um something called fascia blasting, which is something that I do for my face that has really helped keep my skin glowing and supple. So find your thing, okay? Share your beauty and health hacks with your girlfriends. Don't be a gatekeeper, share it. I know this is something that my girlfriends and I like to do. We share our latest wellness obsessions. And again, it's not about vanity, it's about vitality. Somewhere along the way, women were conditioned to believe that aging automatically meant decline. I reject that. So many times when we go into the doctor's office and we tell them that we don't feel well, that we don't feel like ourselves, we are faced with um the medical industry and everybody telling us that that's just the way it is. I want to encourage you to do not accept that. Find the care that you need, find doctors, find systems, find the support that you need. Um again, find the answers because aging can bring changes, of course, but there's so much power in prevention, in support, in finding the right community, nourishment, and just being intentional about your body, being intentional about how you take care of yourself, whether it's through self-care, getting enough sleep, what you feed yourself, how you move your body, and again, the right care team that you put in place. So I want you to, it can be very overwhelming. So I always, of course, go back to start small and think about what's one thing I can do today to start supporting myself and preparing for my future self. Okay. Um brings us to the last thing that I want to talk about today. And this one is trust that you have raised good kids. This one here, as I sit here just weeks away from my youngest graduating high school, I can already feel myself getting so emotional about this because letting go is hard. But if you want to move through this chapter with grace, you have to trust yourself. You have to trust that you did your best, you have to trust that you raised good humans, trust that your kids will figure things out, because that's the whole point. You don't raise children to stay dependent on you forever, you raise them to go live, to stumble, to grow, to become. And yes, there will probably always be moments where you wonder if you could have done something differently. That's motherhood, that's parenthood, and you cannot live trapped in hindsight. You did the best you could with what you knew at that time, and I truly believe that every lesson, both theirs and yours, serves a purpose on the journey. So trust yourself, trust your babies, and trust this next chapter because it can absolutely be beautiful if you allow it to be. And I, for one, am choosing to believe that it will be. So, friend, whether you're already an empty nester or standing on the edge of becoming one, let this episode remind you. You get to choose how you enter this next chapter. You get to grieve and grow, you get to miss your babies and rediscover yourself. You get to let go without losing who you are. In fact, maybe this is finally the season where you come home to yourself. And if this episode spoke to you, send it to another mama who needs this reminder too. And come hang out with me over on Instagram. I'd love to hear what's on your emptiness bucket list. Until next time, friend, trust yourself. You're doing better than you think.
